snofrix-2005-05-12 is based on Knoppix 3.7, including: * KDE 3.3.2 * OpenOffice.org 1.1.3 * Mozilla Firefox 1.0.3 * Gimp 2.6 The features likely to be of most interest are: 1) klik - a one-click installer that allows you to install additional programs, even when running from live CD. This is less fancy than the UnionFS available with the recently released Knoppix 3.8, but it is useable. 2) live installer of graphics drivers for NVidia cards This is old news for Knoppix users, but new to Snofrix. If you were previously frustrated by your computer's inability to properly render celestia or tuxracer, you should be pleased. There are some new games, but the look and the selection of programs is not dramatically different from last year's Snofrix. The explanatory web pages have increased considerably in scope, with many short program summaries. Let me know if these are useful to you -- it was a lot of work to produce them, and I am not yet convinced it was worth it! Unlike snofrix-2004-05-10 of last year, the new Snofrix does not contain any Windows software, for three reasons: 1) I am more interested in promoting Linux as a platform. 2) I was frustrated by the lack of space left on the CD when I included Windows software. The continual increase in program and system size necessarily implies a cutback in the number of installed programs for a fixed-size CD. 3) OpenOffice.org software rapidly decays in value. Although the live CD portion of last year's CD is still perfectly useable -- the games in particular do not have such a rapid development cycle -- the Windows OpenOffice.org and Mozilla software from last year is by now worthless. In my view, the CD has a longer shelf life without Windows software.
